Our Story

Committed to community, independence, and lifelong possibility

A Mission Rooted in Love, Built on Vision

Every family eventually reaches the moment when the school years end, and the question becomes, what’s next?

For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the answer is far from clear. The routines they once relied on begin to fade. Friendships become harder to maintain. Opportunities feel limited. And for families, the uncertainty can be overwhelming.

Journey21 was created to change that story.

We believe every adult with IDD deserves more than care—they deserve a community that sees their strengths, values their voice, and supports their growth. We believe in a future filled with meaningful relationships, purposeful days, and spaces where every person belongs.

Our Mission

To provide safe, supportive, and enriching living and learning options for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in Waukesha County and surrounding communities.

Our Vision

A day when every adult with IDD has accessible, meaningful opportunities for education, employment skill development, social activities, and can live independently in the home of their choice.

How It All Began

In 2014, two mothers—Sheila and Susan—met at a Special Olympics event. Their sons had aged out of school-based programs, and like so many others, they were asking, now what?

What started as a conversation grew into a calling.

With determination, community support, and a growing network of families and advocates, Journey21 officially launched in 2021. Today, it continues to grow—offering programs, partnerships, and a vision for a more inclusive future.

Five Pillars, One Purpose: A Life of Meaning

Journey21’s mission comes to life through five core pillars, each designed to support adults with IDD as they grow in independence, confidence, and community:

Programs & Outings

Hands-on activities, clubs, and community-based outings that foster social connection, skill-building, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

Employment

We provide career readiness training and opportunities for clients to participate in internships/work experiences where they can learn specific job skills.

Residential Living

We will offer adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities the opportunity to live in a condominium or a cottage in The Journey at Pabst Farms, a vibrant and inclusive community where they can have friends, opportunities to grow, and live independently.

Advocacy & Partnership

Serving as a resource of information, we help clients, families, and caregivers navigate through issues such as long-term care, guardianship, financial planning, and more. We also seek community partners who align with our mission and vision and who can help us bring it to life.

Learning & Education

Journey21 offers three learning academies. They are The 18–21 Transition Academy, The Life Academy, and The Summer Academy. The highly structured curriculum helps adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities develop their independent living skills, socialization skills and building community relationships.

Looking Forward

We believe the future can be brighter for every adult with IDD—and that together, we can create communities where everyone has the opportunity to live fully and belong deeply.

Whether you are a family member, educator, service provider, or future partner, we invite you to connect and be part of this journey with us.
